Operating Systems

This course aims to provide an introduction to the basic elements of operating systems. This course covers topics including basic operating system abstractions, mechanisms and their implementations. The course is divided into three parts. The first part of the course introduces concurrency, which means how to manage multiple tasks that execute at the same time and share resources. Topics include processes and threads, context switching, synchronization, scheduling and deadlock. The second part covers memory management, which includes topics such as linking, dynamic memory allocation, dynamic address translation, virtual memory and demand paging. The third part of the course covers file systems, including topics such as storage devices, disk management and scheduling, directories, protection and crash recovery. The coursework consists of a series of programming projects. There will be midterm and final exams.
