Sensors and Automation

Systems Hub / Robotics and Autonomous Systems · 3 Credits

This course introduces the principles, selection, and application of sensors and actuators in automated and robotic systems. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge of measurement principles, sensor characteristics, and major sensor types, including position, motion, proximity, force, pressure, temperature, and basic vision devices, as well as essential concepts of signal conditioning. The curriculum further addresses industrial automation architecture, covering I/O modules, PLC-based sequencing at a conceptual level, and the integration of sensors and actuators within robotic systems. Additional topics include an overview of actuators and drives, feedback mechanisms and basic control strategies, smart sensors, and current networking and safety considerations in industrial environments. Upon completion, students will be equipped to explain the operation of key sensors and actuators, interpret common specifications, and propose suitable sensing and automation solutions for common robotic and manufacturing applications.
